I'm Trevor, president and principal consultant at Bacque 40 Communications.
I began my career as a general assignment reporter, telling the stories of politics, crime, health care and more. I didn't know much about agriculture, environment and food industries. Today, these areas are my primary focus. It's exciting to partner with different organizations and help them get their message out to a variety of stakeholders.
In 2013, I began working for a farmer advocacy group. I turned its then-newspaper into a quarterly magazine, GrainsWest. This publication continues to deliver the straight goods to farmers through unique stories of ag, its people and innovative ideas and trends.
In 2017, I formed Bacque 40 Communications, a marketing/communications studio. Over the years, our team has worked for countless brands, both small and large, and taken care of their communications, campaigns, social media, websites and custom content and anything in between.
At the same time, I spent four years at SAIT Polytechnic where I served as an adjunct instructor in its journalism program. I educated students about ethics and values, how to conduct proper news research, write succinctly and interview people.
Through Bacque 40, we always try and strike a balance of being personable and professional. It's our joy to serve our clientele and manage their MarCom needs.
Industry involvement
Since 2012, I have been an Alberta member of the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation, a national organization that represents 300-plus communications professionals and journalists whose focuses are agriculture, environment, farming and food.
From 2016-2022, I served as a national board director. During that time, I sat as both vice-president (2016-2018) and president (2018-2021). In 2019, I was selected as Canada’s executive member to the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists, the global body representing all communicators and journalists. Over this five-year appointment, I sat on the Host Liaison Committee to help future congresses thrive. In addition, I advocated for Canada’s interests, the promotion and awareness related to the IFAJ and importance of agricultural communications and journalism.
In 2023, I co-chaired the IFAJ's annual global congress, the organization's marquee event, held in a different location each year. We hosted our congress at Olds College and welcomed 200-plus delegates from 30 countries where they learned about Alberta, Prairie and Canadian agriculture.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure to mentor and guide new communicators who have begun to work in the ag and food space. Seeing others grow and excel in their field is a great privilege and I've been proud to have shared in that with many people.
I have served as a judge for the Canadian Agri-Marketing Association's Best of CAMA and for the Alberta/N.W.T. region of the Canada's Outstanding Young Farmers program.
In 2022, I was named the CFWF's Canada's Farm Writer of the Year, the organization's highest honour.
